Words To Live By, Words To Die By, Words

by Kevin Burton

I bury my mother today. Can you imagine such a thing?

Life is a coin flip, with love on one side and pain on the other. Pain, in some measure, is the residue of love.

Live. Love. Toss the coin. Do it.

“There’s a sad day coming, and it might not be too long. But remember the love, the talks, and the hugs, the good times together, and hold on, hold on, hold on!”

“A mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

“A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.” – Gaspard Mermillod

“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dates all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.” – Agatha Christie

“It’s good to be your mom. I’m glad I’m there. I’m glad I’m in that position.”

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (I Corinthians 15:54-55 KJV).

“Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it” Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 NKJV)

“Something tells me it’s time to go
To meet Him alone
To see Him, to love Him
When I start home

Someone’s calling, I know His voice
I’ve heard it through the shadows
That clouds make when they break
Into rain

Let it pour on me
Let it pour down inside of me
To give me light, to give me sight
To let me know you’re living
Really living inside of me”

“There is no velvet so soft as a mother’s lap, no rose as lovely as her smile, no path so flowery as that imprinted with her footsteps.” – Archibald Thompson

“There is a road that leads to glory. I am walking on that road. It’s lonely, but not lonely. God walks with me. He never lets me be lonely. He is my Savior. I will never be alone.”

“A mother’s arms are made of tenderness, and children sleep soundly in them.” – Victor Hugo

“The best place to cry is in a mother’s arms.” – Jodi Picoult

“My doctor told me I would never walk again. My mother told me I would. I believed my mother.” – Wilma Rudolph

“Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There’s no bond so strong in the entire world, no love so instantaneous and forgiving.” – Gail Tsukiyama

“Don’t cry,” was a repeated admonition of my mother as we faced her death together. Whenever she saw me crying, such as the day I told her she had to go to a nursing home, she went into mom mode. She marshalled whatever forces were left to her and she propped me up emotionally.

I can still hear mom saying, “don’t cry.”

Sorry to be so disobedient. But even with the sorrow, comes a joy in what we’ve had together and what we can expect, just around the corner.

“Death doesn’t have the final say. Yes, it’s the last enemy to be destroyed, but Jesus, our hope, has crushed death in His resurrection. Therefore we have, and can offer, hope and comfort, looking forward to the day when we’ll never say goodbye again.”

“Whenever I finally go home, picture me smiling because I finally made it, and picture yourself joining me someday.”
